Meet the Coach

Mark Dougherty is a world-class coach and former MLS goalkeeper. Since his retirement, Mark has become a sought-after coach. He has coached at all levels, from youth, collegiate, professional and the U.S. National Teams, for both men and women, and the Men’s Olympic Team. He is a current member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

He began playing soccer at the youth level, and was brought up to the Varsity team as a freshman, helping his team win the conference title in his first year. After starting four years in high school and repeatedly reaching the state playoffs, he was offered a scholarship to Fresno State University. After red-shirting his freshman year, he started four consecutive years.

During his college career, Dougherty was a four-year letterman. He and the team won three conference championships and made it to the NCAA Final Four. Dougherty was team captain his junior and senior seasons, in 1988 and 1989. In 1989, the team set records for fewest losses (3) and longest unbeaten streak, with 17 wins and a 14-0-3 record. Dougherty was repeatedly selected for All-Big West, selected to the Second Team, All-Big West in 1987, and First Team 1988 and 1989. He ended his college career, in 1989, with 0.76 GAA. Dougherty still holds the Big West Conference record for career shutouts, with thirty-eight between 1986-1989.

Mark was a pioneer in American professional soccer. In the early 1990’s, several professional leagues existed before the formation of Major League Soccer. (MLS) One of Mark’s teams, the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks, was the first American soccer team to reach the CONCACAF Championship in 1992. The Tampa Bay Mutiny selected Mark in the first round of the inaugural MLS draft, seventh overall. He joined the Columbus Crew in 1998, and eventually retired from playing in 2002. During his career, he was named an All Star twice and Most Valuable Player numerous times.
